Card Sorts

Card sorts are perfect for review because they encourage students to reason and to process their reasoning in a tactile way. Students cut out cards containing either examples or definitions of concepts and then sort those cards into categories labeled on either envelopes or mats.
Since students learn best through all their senses, and recent research has found that tactile activities engage the brain better than anything else. Whether it's cutting, sorting, or doodling, students learn better when their hands as well as their minds are active (check out this excellent article from Scholastic).

Download a free card sort here and give it a try.

Here are Grammar Card Sorts I've created so far. They are all thematic, generally about a book or series of books, but you don't have to be studying the books to use them--there are no spoilers.
